The love/hate relationship with AI

Updated: Aug 17

Remember when AI didn’t exist but the foreshadowing of it had people worried it would come after white collar jobs but when reality hit, it came after artists? Not gonna lie, that was the plot twist I didn’t see coming; yet, here we are…

It’s been about a year or so since AI really started coming into our daily lives (whether we want it or not) As an artist, I’m finding it harder and to harder to compete with the sorcery. If only my mind could move 1000 miles a millisecond (I get pretty close when caffeine or wine come into the picture though- thus this sassy post). Really though, how do you compete with such a force? It’s not like you can look up its historic tweets and get it cancelled or even beat it fair and square. To use the term “beat” when talking about technology is insane in general. Life is insane! AI IS INSANE!!!!

But I’m coping well (clearly) and have been reminded recently of the old saying, “ if you can’t beat them, join them”. Applying that mindset with AI has actually been such a game changer, although it took me a while to learn how to utilize that mantra without being a phony.

For example, I’m not going to use AI to do things for me in the literal sense. I don’t use it to create my art, or to pass it as my own. However, Ive found it helpful in giving me ideas or layouts that I can form together. It’s kinda like my rough draft, and it’s helped me a lot when the brain isn’t braining… or thinking?…

I’ve also recently discovered the beautiful relationship of AI and planning itinerary for a trip. Today I was given the task to find affordable flights for our upcoming trip in September. I usually use Pinterest for some ideas, but none of them really dialed in the certain spot I did want to go to. (This is where AI enters the chat) (no pun intended)

I opened the website and asked” Can you plan me a 12 day itinerary for traveling italy and Switzerland” And God Bless this silly smart robot because it gave me a solid list with the hours of driving between each destination along with recommendations. I would say “add this” or “take out this/replace” too with suggestions if I didn’t like what it wrote. (Techy’s- you get how this works)

To really hint at just how old & lame I am, this rush felt like the first time I took Molly. And yes, I mean that, sadly. Maybe it’s my lack of understanding of the inter webs and artificial intelligence, maybe it’s my old soul demeanor, but one thing I know for sure is this technology is knocking my socks off and I think im blushing???

Before I make you (&me) cringe anymore, I think I’ll wrap this up. It never dawned on me 1. That AI would come after my profession and 2. That I would join forces and make it my little bitch. For those of you that are in a similar boat; whether that’s art or planning, I highly suggest giving the all knowing chatty gptith a whirl. It almost feels wrong for suggesting it, but it also feels so, so right. Like I said, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

PS- I know there are quite a bit of grammatical errors in here. Don’t judge me, I skimmed by in literature with solid C’s and DID NOT use AI (again, clearly) to write this. Blog rant via all natural baby…..

Plus some wine… 😉
